From Our CEO - Ireland

AAA

This past September I had the opportunity to travel to Ireland on the annual CEO trip with a group of 41 AAA South Jersey members ready for an adventure! Ireland was a trip that was postponed twice due to the pandemic and, as late as June, it was uncertain if some of the destinations would be ready in time. I can honestly say it was well worth the wait as Ireland did not disappoint!

Filled with stunning beauty and breathtaking views, the picturesque bays, green grass, and boundless cliffs are nothing short of spectacular. The Irish are warm, kind and their food hearty, comforting and designed to fill you for the day ahead. For my tastes, I highly recommend both the Guinness stew and their fish and chips. These were daily staples!

The trip began in Dublin, where I would say the Guinness tour was an unparalleled highlight. Featuring seven unique levels, each informative, including several interactive opportunities that included learning how to properly pour a Guinness. Upon reaching the seventh and final floor, we entered the Gravity bar, which featured a panoramic view of the city. It was literally the best seat in the house while enjoying a freshly poured Guinness to complete the experience!

Another favorite place that I visited is Blarney Castle.  With the original structure having been built in the 10th century, as you ascend through the winding staircase, it is like a trek through a time long ago. I did kiss the Blarney Stone, which was not an easy feat, and am awaiting the gift of eloquence to be bestowed upon me.

If you have the chance, visiting Dingle is a must. Nestled on the edge of the Atlantic, this quaint village looks out over Dingle Bay. Filled with tiny shops and friendly pubs where live traditional music plays, you enjoy the feel of a relaxed way of life that made us never want to leave!

We were fortunate to have perfect weather for trekking through one of the most breathtaking places in all of Europe, the Cliffs of Moher. We certainly accumulated our steps that day as we walked as far out on the cliffs as permitted. It was worth every step to see the power and the beauty of the waves crashing into the sea cliffs. Indescribable, captivating beauty that must be seen with your own eyes to truly appreciate!

Perhaps the highlight of the trip was the Ashford Castle afternoon tea experience. Dating back to approximately 1228, the castle has been extended over the years to around 26,000 sprawling, breathtaking acres. The Ashford Castle afternoon tea experience is a well-preserved tradition that has been upheld since 1868. Sitting in the George V Dining Room, just as they did centuries ago, we sipped on tea and feasted on a medley of carefully prepared finger sandwiches, freshly made scones and delectable desserts. The grounds, the service, the experience were simply amazing!

I have only shared a handful of what our journey to Ireland included. Galway, Inch Beach and Cong (where The Quiet Man was filmed) were also among the trip’s highlights. I am thankful for the experience and being able to travel again after several challenging years. I am also thankful for the friends made along the way and encourage you to join us on one of our exclusive departures. These trips are carefully selected with customized itineraries that include unforgettable experiences. There are also many to choose from that include Italy, Ireland, Iceland, and Switzerland to name a few. My CEO trip in September 2023 is a Viking River cruise along the Danube. Hope to see you aboard!
