A Recipe for Safe Holiday Cooking

AAA

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. Before you start preparing your next big family meal, check out our tips for safe holiday cooking.

Check Your Fire Alarms

Before you start cooking your holiday feast, check that all your fire alarms are working properly and that you have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of an emergency.

Don’t Leave the Stove or Oven Unattended

Whether you’re boiling, frying, sautéing or baking in the oven, never leave your cooking food unattended. Keep an eye on your feast to prevent it from burning or catching fire. If you need to leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.

Declutter Your Work Area

Don’t leave oven mitts, hand towels, napkins or other flammable items near the stove as they can easily catch fire. Keeping an organized and clean workspace will help you avoid kitchen fires and other mishaps.

Keep Children and Pets Away from the Cooking Area

The cooking area can be a chaotic and dangerous place for children and pets. Hot surfaces and liquids, sharp knives, and electric appliances on the counter can all be safety risks so it’s best to keep kids, animals, and all their toys out of the kitchen.
