Winterize Your Car

AAA

Between winter winds, sleet, and snow, winter driving comes with a host of hazards, which is why it’s important your car is ready to brave the big chill! Follow the winter tips below to winterize your car and help prevent an emergency.

  1. Give your battery a check-up. Cold weather kills batteries! It’s not too late to make sure your battery’s terminals and connections are tight and free of corrosion (the white or blue build up). If your battery is more than three years old, it could be reaching the end of its lifespan, so it’s a good idea to have it tested. Making sure your battery is winter-ready will prevent you from being stranded in the cold! Request a free quote and battery test at AAA.com/battery.

  2. Time for an oil change. Older oil gets thick and sluggish in cold weather. If it’s too thick, it won’t keep your engine properly lubricated. While some cars should have their oil changed every 3,000 miles, others can go 5,000-7,000 between changes. Check your owner’s manual to see how often you should change your oil, and which oil is best for your car.

  3. Check your Tires. Safe tires in icy conditions are a must! Check the pressure on all tires, including the spare – you’ll find the recommended pressure on the driver’s door jamb. Plus, make sure your treads aren’t worn down by trying the penny test. Insert a penny into the groove of the tire with Lincoln’s head facing down. Can you see the top of Lincoln’s head? If so, your tires treads are too low and should be replaced. You may also want to consider switching to snow tires.

  4. Change to Winter Wipers. If you can’t remember the last time you replaced your windshield wipers, it’s been too long! Wipers usually only last about a year. Over time, they crack, split and just don’t work as efficiently. Since visibility is the most important part of safe driving, invest in new wipers before you’re caught in a blinding storm. Wiper blades should completely clear the glass with each swipe. Also, make sure the windshield washer reservoir is filled.
