Port Norris, Cumberland County, NJ “Oyster Capital of the World”

AJ Meerwald

If names like “Cape May Salts,” “Elder Point,” and “East Point” set your taste buds tingling, you may want to take a scenic drive down to historic Port Norris in Cumberland County, NJ. Once hailed as the “Oyster Capital of the World,” Port Norris (and adjacent Shellpile and Bilvalve) was known to have more millionaires per square mile than anywhere else in the country. Although those times have passed, rich history on the oyster industry is still alive and well at The Bayshore Center at Bivalve and Rutgers University’s Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory. To get an authentic vibe and feel the wind in your hair, take a ride on the AJ Meerwald, NJ’s Tall Ship. You will usually find it docked at the Bayshore Center and at other ports around the state.
