AAA

AAA South Jersey Assistant Fleet Manager, Josh Verde, answers common member questions about winter driving and roadside assistance.

Q: During the colder fall and winter months, how long should I warm up my car before driving?

A: Best practice is 15-20 minutes before you need to drive your car. This will defrost any windows and warm up the fluids in your car. Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area like a garage.

Q: What are some emergency supplies I should keep in my vehicle during the winter?

A: It’s a good idea to have some supplies ready in your vehicle in case you encounter snowy or icy winter weather. Before you hit the road, consider packing a shovel, ice scraper, de-icer in a 1-gallon washer fluid/can, some warm clothing, a blanket, extra food and water, a mobile phone charger, flashlight, and any necessary medications.

Q: After I request AAA roadside assistance, should I stay in my car and wait for service?

A: If you have a breakdown on a major highway, it’s best to stay in your car. If you break down on a roadway that is close to a business, and it is safe to leave your vehicle, you can wait by the business.
