Moving? Leave Your Hazardous Materials Behind

AAA

When packing for a move, most household goods are safe to transport if they are packed properly. However, some of your belongings can be hazardous and, in some cases, illegal to transport. In general, anything flammable or combustible should not be transported in your vehicle or a rental moving truck.

Here are some items you should avoid packing in your moving boxes:

• Aerosols

• Charcoal, propane tanks, and lighter fluid

• Cleansers containing bleach or ammonia

• Fertilizer, weed killer, or pesticides

• Nail polish remover

• Oil or gas

• Paint cans and paint thinners

• Rubbing alcohol

• Fireworks or signal flares

• Antifreeze

• Fire extinguishers

• Automobile batteries

In addition, take caution when moving lawnmowers. While the mower itself does not pose any problems, any amount of fuel in the mower’s tank can be dangerous. If moving a lawnmower, completely drain it of fuel and make sure the fuel tank is completely clean. A dirty tank could lead to buildup of highly combustible vapor.

Finally, be aware that drivers can be fined up to $75,000 for transporting dangerous goods in a moving truck. If you are unsure if certain items are flammable or combustible, contact your local branch of the Department of Transportation.
